Thanksgiving on Oahu’s North Shore: What’s Open, Where to Eat & How to Plan a Group Trip (2026 Guide)

What is open and closed on Thanksgiving on Oahu’s North Shore in 2026, where to find dinner, and how to plan a group holiday stay around the surf.

    By Oahu Whale House

Short answer: yes, Oahu's North Shore is a very good place to spend Thanksgiving, especially with a big group, but it works best if you plan the day around what is closed. In 2026 Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. The Polynesian Cultural Center is closed that day, many small businesses shut down, and winter surf is just starting to arrive, so the beach is for watching rather than swimming. The easy formula is to cook at your rental, do the big attractions on Tuesday or Wednesday, and keep Thursday simple: a late-morning shoreline walk, a long dinner, and an evening of wave-watching or a quiet stroll.

What is open and closed on Thanksgiving Day on the North Shore

The one closure that surprises people most is the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie. Its own hours page lists Thanksgiving Day as a full closure, along with Sundays, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The Hukilau Marketplace and Pounders Restaurant on the same property are also listed as closed on Thanksgiving. The Center normally closes on Wednesdays too, but its page lists Wednesday, November 25, 2026 as an open day, which makes the day before Thanksgiving the best window for the luau and the evening show. If your group wants that experience, read our honest take on whether the Polynesian Cultural Center is worth it and our comparison of the best luaus on the North Shore, then book the Wednesday slot early.

Waimea Valley's own listing names only Christmas Day and New Year's Day as full closures and does not mention Thanksgiving, so it is likely open, but call before you drive over. Winter is also the weakest season for the waterfall swim: heavy rain can bring dangerous currents, and lifeguards decide each morning whether swimming is allowed. Our Waimea Valley guide has the current prices and swim rules.

Beaches and parks never close, and that is the real advantage of a holiday here. Everything else is a call-ahead item. Local shave ice stands, food trucks and family-run restaurants often take the day off or close early, and holiday hours are rarely posted until the last minute. Do not assume your favorite truck is open, and have a plan B for the meal itself. Regular business resumes on Black Friday, November 27.

Where to eat Thanksgiving dinner on the North Shore

You have three realistic options, and which one fits depends on your group size and how much you want to cook.

    Cook at your rental

This is what most large groups end up doing, and it is the option our guests with big families tend to love most: one long table, kids and grandparents together, nobody waiting on a reservation. The catch is the supply chain. The North Shore has only a few full grocery options, and the turkey and sides sell out in the days before the holiday. Pre-order if you can. Hawaii grocery chains and Zippy's have run turkey and side-dish pre-orders in past years, and in 2025 one major chain's order window closed around November 19, so assume a similar deadline this year and check each store's website now rather than in November. Our guide to grocery shopping on the North Shore covers where to stock up and what to buy ahead of time.

    Hire a private chef

If you want the feast without the cooking, a private chef can come to the house. Holiday dates book up early, so ask now. We explain how that works, what groups typically spend, and what to ask in our guide to a private chef dinner on the North Shore.

    Book a resort dinner

The Ritz-Carlton O'ahu, Turtle Bay in Kahuku (the resort many people still call Turtle Bay Resort) has listed a Thanksgiving dinner at its Alaia restaurant, with adult and child pricing and a 19 percent service charge for parties of six or more. The page we found does not state a year, so treat the price as a guide and confirm the date, menu and reservation details directly with the resort. It also asks for 72 hours' notice for dietary restrictions. For a group of ten or more this is the pricier route, but it is the only full-service holiday dinner on this stretch of coast that we could find.

How to use the days around Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year across Hawaii, so flights, rental cars and lodging tighten early. A good North Shore rhythm looks like this.

    • Saturday or Sunday before: arrive, shop, and do the farmers markets if you can. Our guide to North Shore farmers markets lists days and hours for all four.
    • Monday and Tuesday: Haleiwa, snorkeling or tide pools only if the water is calm, and a drive to Waimea Valley. See our Haleiwa guide.
    • Wednesday, November 25: the Polynesian Cultural Center luau and show, since it is open that day.
    • Thanksgiving Day: a slow morning, a walk or surf-watching, then dinner.
    • Black Friday and the weekend: traffic is back, shops reopen, and the Honolulu holiday events (the Waikiki Holiday Parade is listed for Friday, November 27) are an option if someone wants a change of pace.

The Honolulu Turkey Trot is also listed for Thanksgiving morning, but it is an hour or more away, so it only works if you plan to be on the south shore that day.

Weather and surf in late November

November is mild: daytime highs near 81 degrees and ocean water around 79 degrees. The North Shore is also where Oahu's first serious northwest swells show up. On a flat day Shark's Cove and Three Tables can still be good for snorkeling, but when a swell arrives the same beaches become dangerous within hours, and lifeguards will close or warn off sections of shoreline. Check the surf forecast each morning and follow posted signs. Our guide to where to watch surfing shows the safest places to take in big waves, and the month-by-month guide explains how quickly conditions change. If the weather turns, our rainy day list covers what is actually open.

Common Thanksgiving mistakes on the North Shore

    • Planning the Polynesian Cultural Center for Thursday. It is closed. Go Wednesday.
    • Waiting to order the turkey. Pre-order windows close well before the holiday.
    • Assuming a favorite restaurant is open. Call first and keep a backup meal.
    • Swimming because the sun is out. A calm morning can turn into a closed shoreline by afternoon.
    • Underestimating the drive. Holiday weekend traffic on Kamehameha Highway is slow. See our North Shore traffic guide and our advice on whether you need a rental car.

Why a house makes more sense than hotel rooms for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is about being together, and that is hard to do across several hotel rooms with a restaurant reservation as the only shared space. A home with a full kitchen and a big table lets grandparents rest, kids run around, and the cook decide the schedule. Staying on the North Shore also means the surf, the farmers markets and Laie are minutes away instead of a long haul from Waikiki. If you are weighing it, see our comparison of Waikiki versus the North Shore and our guide to planning a family reunion on the North Shore. We also cover how the rest of the season plays out in our Christmas and holidays guide.

Oahu Whale House sleeps up to 13 guests, and the Cottage adds room for 8 more, so a group of up to 21 can share one Thanksgiving table on the property. Holiday weeks fill early. Text us at (808) 207-6285 or request availability to ask about your dates.

    Frequently asked questions

Sometimes, on flat days, but the first big winter swells usually arrive around now. Check conditions each morning and follow lifeguards.
